What is Time Banking?
At its most basic level, Time banking is simply about spending an hour doing something for somebody in your community. That hour goes into the Time Bank as a Time Dollar. Then you have a Time dollar to spend on having someone doing something for you. It's a simple idea, but it has powerful ripple effects in building community connections.
At the People’s Service Exchange, a project of The Grapevine Family & Community Resource Center, we offer a coordinated network to connect people who have a skill with people who need that skill.
Time banking can be a wonderful way to connect with others in the community, save money and build new relationships. What that looks like is different for each member. It is not direct bartering, so there are no tax implications. You earn your time dollars and may choose to spend, save or donate them, so it is not charity. Having a network of people that you know you can go to should you ever have the need is reassuring and it feels great to be able to help others when they need it too. We have over 350 services listed and many members waiting to be there when called upon!
Please consider joining us and spreading the word to your friends, family and neighbors. If you would like to become more involved or have any ideas to share, please contact me.
The PSE is a neighbor helping neighbor program that operates in part thanks to member, community and business tax deductible donations. We are working to create a system that is sustainable. Suggested annual contribution for members is $20 but no one is ever turned away. Talk with me if this poses a hardship.
